I am wanting to lift my truck, I have been bouncing around to different sites looking for the right lift. I keep coming back to the Tuff Country 5" lift. Anyone have it or herd anything good/bad about it?

What kind of wheeling do you to get into?

right now living in VA beach so, next to nothing, went to GW once on a newbie run but I want do do some harder things. Rocks. Definetly want to be able to do some black trails maybe brave some reds.

Donahoe or King shocks in front. Deavers,OME or Alcans in rear. That will give you around 3 inches and have a good ride. Then 3 inch body and you can run 33's.

When you cut the the frame out it is not easy to put it back to stock or change it later. I have seen a couple of them sub-frame lift have big problems. Don't know about the tuff country. But i do remeber them not being liked on the pirate or the national board. I don't remeber why you can do a search. I think it was more the people and service than the lift it's self.

I would have to say the Fab tech is the best sub-frame lift i have seen. Never seen the one your looking at.

For Reds and blacks you want to head in the direction of putting a solid axle under your truck. But, then again, look at Turner, and BeaterToy. They do alot with cralwer gears.

We should take you to Paragon to let you see some of the harder trails. But get some sliders first.

I didn't read the black ands red trail thing. I would say a SAS and kiss you body bye bye.

before I get too excited about how much would a SAS be? and before I fire up the search engines any reccomendations or where to start looking? Also this truck will be pretty much my daily driver, would doing this type of lift hurt me on paved roads besides gas milage?

Definetly... I could probably fab my own sliders.

yeah bro if you wanna do reds SAS that pile. only dickheads like me take IFS trucks on red trails. but seriously if thats what you wanna get into then yer ahead of the game, TBH i NEVER thought id be doin the kinda stupid shit i do with my truck when i first started wheelin, and because if this im stuck with a very low-geared IFS pile o shit that in all honesty needs a SFA in a bad way. if yer into drivin on shit that folks cant even walk on, save your money, start researching, and have that thing SAS'd. to start, id get a 3" BL, lockers F&R, re-gear to 4.88 and some skinny 33's on low back spaced wheels, see how you like trashin a perfectly good truck, if you dont mind beatin on it, go for dual cases and see if you can handle the pucker factor that duals give you sometimes, any of the things listed above wont have to come off for a SAS so you've wasted no money. then if you decide that 5k (probly more) for a SAS isnt for you, you have a damn capable truck thats actually useful for something other than this money pit we call a hobby

oh yeah and NO DROP BRACKET LIFTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! they're fuckin junk and most of the guys who have them will tell you the same

LeN

actually now that I think about it, this is going to be something I should talk to a shop about huh? Or are they hard to do?

TURNER
10-26-2005, 11:22 PM
is what hard to do?

LeN
10-26-2005, 11:24 PM
a solid axel swap.. I am pretty handy in the garage but 4x4's are greek to me, not from stupidy just havent tried yet

TURNER
10-26-2005, 11:28 PM
yer lookin at at least 5k, probly more

thats why i said try those things that i listed first, that way you dont spend $$$ on shit thats gonna get torched off if you decide to go SFA

LeN
10-26-2005, 11:39 PM
gotcha... thanks for the advice, I am probably going to start looking into a 3" BL as turner reccomended, I always thought BL's were only for looks and extra clearnace though.

As most have said, I would not get another drop bracket lift. I would get a 2" spacer or coilover and 32" mud tires. With the money you saved you should get sliders and other body protection. Then if you go on harder trails you will find what else you will need to add (lockers, dual cases, SAS ect). I did the wrong thing by lifting my truck before 4wheeling and have found that the lift does not gain much. If you would want to keep IFS, the long travel that Ted has kicks ass but is a lot of $$$. The other thing to look at is do you want to trash your new truck? I wish I had bought an older toy and work on that and keep my DD stock. The last thing to look at is after you lift you truck it will be harder to sell it so being able to put it back to stock may be a thing to consider. My truck is illegal in MD and it would next to impossible to sell because you can’t get it through inspection.

Best solution for keeping your Taco in good shape and also having an awesome trail rig:

keep the Taco stock, buy a $1000 beater '80-'85 pickup and throw about $2000 at it for some lockers, t-case gears, and the biggest tires you can fit under cut wheel wells.

If not that, do a small IFS lift (NO bracket kits!) and a small body lift. Add a locker and 33"s and you're set.

This is where I'm personally at right now, a year of wheeling my truck has told me a couple of things; I don't want to mess up my truck I still owe on (any more than I already have.) and I don't want to have to care about it. Scratches, dents, broken pinion gears or axle shafts. I just don't want to care... I don't mind fixing a broken rig, but I do mind not having a ride to work on Monday morning. If you want to wheel your truck on the big stuff, be prepared for it not to be road ready after some of your trips. I'm beater shopping myself right now!

If not that, do a small IFS lift (NO bracket kits!) and a small body lift. Add a locker and 33"s and you're set.

This was my plan for my truck, and pretty much what I did, except for the body lift. I'm happy with it both on and off road. I spent some $$ for the better parts, and am glad I did. I also suggest some sliders with this setup...
You can run blues with a rig like this easy. It might be a good idea to make these mods over the winter, and wheel with it next summer on some blues at RC or Paragon before you go any bigger. You'll be quite surprised what you can get through set up like this. I really do suggest wheeling up in PA before deciding to go for a SAS or drop bracket unless you're lifting for looks, and I know you're not. If you don't care what your body looks like, add a front locker, a crawler, some armor and 34's and wheel with Turner! If you can drive it, the truck will make it, though, maybe with some dents.
Coming from **** land, I didn't think my Taco would be nearly what my CJ was off road, but these trucks never cease to amaze me. Point being, wheel what you've got a lot harder before you decide what to spend a whole lot of money on. That's just my suggestion.

Yep. I've owned my rig for 13 years and 4 days, and I've been wheeling it the whole time. I am just now at the point where I've outgrown 32" tires and a 1.5" lift

Man seriously if your even thinking of running blacks and reds you should go with as a passenger on them. Ride along with someone and ask some questions along the trail. You might be surprised about some of the answers.

Now I wheeled IFS and SAS.

I had a 3inch suspension lift and 33s with 4.88s one locker and 4.7case. I ran alot of stuff that way and drove it daily. I wheeled mine every other week for a long time and eventually started breaking stuff. Changing parts to drive home sucks. The last draw was the lower crossmember bending backwards. It could have been fixed but wasnt worth it. The rig was able to run blacks without problems but it took its toll as Turner and beater will tell you theirs are now.

Now its SASed. It wheels much better but its not legal here(pa). So its a trailer queen. Now that the truck works better and you push it harder you need more upgrades cause your breaking stuff. I finally got my rig to the point it doesnt break parts but I'm sure if I added it up I would have a heart attack.

Black trails will cause damage eventually. Doesnt matter how good a driver you are. When your on harder trails it happens.

My suggestion is think about it really hard what you want. IF you really want to run hard stuff buy something cheap and build that. SASing a 20k rig is a waste.

IF you decide milder trails are good for now slowly build your taco. Take your time and gain some experience on the trails as well as working on your junk. Do what Turner said about mods that will allow you to not waste money on the ft end.

Lastly look at some of the people like Fireman and skittle and some others who have SASed tacos and cant get rid of them.

alright, thanks for all the excellent advice. I guess it would probably be best not to tear up that new truck, so I will do as you all reccomended and get some more expierance on the blues and slowly build it up. I'd hate to rush into something and screw it up. Again I thank everyone for their input and will more than likely be asking more questions. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

just to be clear, i AM a taco guy and DO NOT endorse you buying a mini as a trail beater. i say fuck it, wheel the taco, its just up to you to figure out what kinda wheelin you wanna. IMO it takes big balls to wheel a newer truck like a taco, and it takes even bigger balls to cut it up. i know that when i get in a group with rigs like eric's and fireman's, i love the looks on people faces, and watching them nearly shit themselves when they find out i drove it there is worth all the body damage in the world.

yeah man, i wouldnt suggest following me, but your more than welcome to ride along. ill teach you the fine art of having a complete and total disregard for the well being (and resale value) of your truck, this way you can see whats its like to ruin a perfectly good 4x4 without fuckin up your truck
