Here's the plan:
Drive up to Shoe Creek Saturday morning. Hit Shoe Creek and drive to GWNF for camping at the meadow Sat afternoon/evening, wheeling there if there's enough light. Then hit some GWNF trails and head home on Sunday.
All are welcome from first-timers to guys that have nothing better to do.
The wheeling is easy in all these areas, it's more about making the trip than hitting tough trails, as there are no tough trails here. Anyone interested just post here.
Due to the short time-frame, this run has been cross-posted on another local forum with a lot of ****ers, so if you can't handle some ****s on this run, stay quiet and stay home.

I have a wedding to go to on Saturday, and I'm supposed to be showing my Heep on Sunday to a guy who might buy it. Depending on whether or not that gets scheduled, I might head down for the day on Sunday.

I think i'm going to have to just meet you in the medow satuday afternoon/evening, and take advantage of wheeling sunday.

I'll be there. Doesn't look like it will be a big group, but, we'll see you there Saturday night.

Beater:
You know you want to wheel that TJ one more time before it's gone.... Take the prospective buyer with you and show him what it can do.

Just tell me how to get to shoe creek and I'm in.

Kyle do you still need or want front mud flaps, I will bring mine if you do.

Jeremy, thanks, we'll give you a call if we run into trouble!

Hey Robbie, yeah, I'd still love the mud flaps, bring them along.

The problem with Shoe Creek is I've never been there. The directions below describe it well, and I can find it, I think, on the Topo map and on my GPS. Problem is, other than the Fish Cultural Station, I have no idea of any landmarks for meeting folks at. What say we skip Shoe Creek and meet at GWNF Saturday since everyone knows how to get there? I'm game either way, those coming tell me what you think.

A couple of things for those coming, dress in light or bright colors(i.e. don't look like a deer,) and bring some wood if you can.

Kyle

First of all, go buy the DeLorme, VA Atlas(Kyle notes, I have this anyone who goes offroad MUST have one,) if you don't have it. This is money well spent. This atlas has helped me find
my way home many times. Even the most obscure dirt road can be found in this atlas. It's great. I got mine from Barnes
and Nobles Bookstore. If you can't find one, call DeLorme at 1.800.227.1656, ext 6200. Shoe Creek Trail is on page 54
Section B-3.

On to the trail... I'll assume we're coming from North of Waynesboro: Take Interstate 81 South to Waynesboro. Continue
on I-81 about 15 miles south of Waynesboro until you see the sign for the Steeles Tavern/Raphine exit. This should be
Route 606. Turn left on Rt-606 towards Steeles Tavern. Continue (south?) on Rt-606 until you reach Route 11. Turn left
on Rt11, go about 50 yards, take your next right onto Rt-56. Shoe Creek trail is off of Rt-56.

Continue on Rt-56, past a small (tiny)) town, over some railroad tracks, and then up the mountain. Rt-56 is a steep road up
the mountain. (My old Ford really moans up this hill). Eventually, Rt-56 will begin to level out. You should pass the
Montebello Fish Cultural Station (they teach fish how to speak French) on your right. Now you're really close, maybe a
mile or so. Start looking for a dirt road on your RIGHT side. It will be FR-826 (but, alas the sign is usually hidden by a
tree). There will be a house up a small hill to the right of the dirt road. There will be split rail fence in front of the house.
On the left of the dirt road is a meadow (Crabtree Meadow). You'll also be on the downhill side of Rt-56. (If you miss it,
you'll end up at the Crabtree Falls Parking area. Turn around here, go back up the mountain).

You're off-roading now... Turn right onto the dirt road (FR-826). This is a state maintained dirt road that will lead you up
the mountain, past some primo primitive campsites, past a gravel parking area for a nice hiking trail. (Stop here, take a 2
mile hike to the falls and overlook. Well worth the walk).

I will be able to make it on Saturday but can't camp out as I am flying to Cali for work on Sunday.

Kyle what time you leaving? Mind if I follow again?

hecull
11-03-2005, 05:46 AM
Follow away! Since we have the long haul from down here, I was thinking of leaving around 6:00 am to meet the NOVA guys and make the most of the day. I tend to get up early though and am flexible.
That too early to leave out?
Kyle

LeN

not early at all, well it is early but I would rather leave early to get more wheeling in. I'll be at your place at 6 maybe we grab some grub for the road.

Shoe Creek Mapquest directions...

I mapquested to Alhambra, VA US and from what I can tell from my topo map, that is less than a mile from the trail. I have not been there so may want verification from someone who has been there.

GreenTaco4x4

From Lynchburg, which is South of the trail its "29N, Left on 151, bear left on 56w, then a left onto 56, Left onto 666, then a right onto 827, follow 827 and look for a metal bridge on the right a few miles down, take that right over the bridge and it turns into the trail"

Once on the trail you will eventually come to a fork, the left makes a big circle and brings you back to the fork, although it does have the best obstacle which is slick rock, to the right stay on the main trail as the rest is private property and it will eventually spit you out at the crabtree hiking trail parking area. Follow the fire road out to get back to 56, make a right onto it and you will go back down the mountain and 666 will be on you right.

You need to get a DeLorme map, I found the trail w/o directions so it really isn't THAT hard to find.

Ok I will.

It does matter to me, I just want to get out.

Shoe Creek Saturday:
Well, I guess it can't be too hard to find per GreenTaco4x4, and it's something different. How about we do it? A longer drive for the NOVA folks, but again, something different. Say meet at the fish hatchery at the below address at 10:00 on Saturday:
Montebello Fish Cultural Station
359 Fish Hatchery Road
Montebello, VA 24464
540-377-2418
Coords are N37°50.635' W79°07.837'

Wheel Shoe Creek and head to the meadow at GWNF, pitch camp, and if there's light, hit a trail or two there. Some trails Sunday, then head home.

So far I've got:
Len with me from Southside Tidewater
JasonCM(Jason) from Alexandria
04Robbie(Robbie) from Sterling
Maybe Beater(Jason) Sunday at GWNF
Doubtful GreenTaco4x4, caught your post on DSO, if you decide to diss your frat brothers, come on down!

If you're coming and not listed, post up so we know to wait on you.

That works for me. I went on mapquest to get directions and is says there is a fish hatchery lane not road, is that right. If it is I have a 3 hour drive not much longer for me. 10 is fine with me.

Sorry to those coming to GWNF on Sunday. With Len and Robbie only planning to spend the day, I didn't feel like motoring all the way up to GWNF and setting up camp in the dark, etc...

We did have a good time though. We found the trail with no problems. It was not a difficult trail at all, but a nice change from the usual at GWNF. More rocks, less mud. Not as rutted out either.
We ran it down, then searched GWNF down there for any trail worth our time, couldn't find anything, so went back up Shoe Creek, which was more fun.
Thanks Len and Robbie.

Thanks Jason. You should have seen it in person! One of the best sights I've ever seen. The picture isn't even close to the real thing.

Yeah, we did have fun. Sorry we missed you and JasonCM.
Having gone through so many big events this year, a run with a just a couple other trucks was great fun! Especially without having to drive to PA for something different. Hope to do it again soon.

HAHA! I forgot about the naked guy in a skirt!
To set the scene, we come out of some lame trail to a parking area for a hiking trail. We start talking about where to go next and out from the trail comes this topless, 70 year old guy wearing a kilt. That is really not something you see every day, nor something you want to ever see again.
I too have a few more pics, and high resolution of what I posted and the others. If you guys are interested, PM me.
