Sort of north-central VA, between Warrenton and Charlottesville. Not too far off of Rt. 29.

Be careful. The "Madison trail" is not a trail meant for 4x4 fun. The Virginia Department of Inland Game and Fisheries and the Shenandoah National Park allow public access on that trail to give hunters better access to the Devils Ditch area of the Rapidan Wildlife Management Area. It is currently Deer season up there. If you really want to keep that area open to the public, I would advise not going there during hunting season and not entering the trail from the south end which requires you to cross a large stream right off of a public road.

one of the fellas going has family property that borders on the park...I will be sure to wear blaze orange and "tread lightly"....I am all about free public access, no dumbass stunts for me

I know you'll be smart. I just don't want people to get tickets (A few fromt his board have received warnings from Park Rangers to never go there again) or cause the RWMA to close the trail down. I totally agree with multi use and shared access. Right now it's the hunters turn. After hunting season and before trout season, I'll have my turn. :-)

well, the trip was great! we had some built rigs out, and mine, we stopped and talked with a bunch of hunters and fisherman, all of whom were very nice, and we got a lot of thumbs up from the local boys...mix of ice, mud, and snow made for an interesting day.....gonna have to wait till the season is over for the next trip, gotta git the beater ready:)
