I copied this from a post I saw on Pirate 4x4 and made a few changes:

There are basically 4-5 main trails in GWNF that are open.

Dictum Ridge, Dry River Run, Kephart Run, Slate Springs Run (Meadow Knob and Flagpole Knob) and the backside of Second Mountain (the road at the top has been gated by the property owners.) There are some trails in the NE area of the park also: Peter's Mill Run, etc.

Your best bet is to contact the ranger's office and request a "Quad Area" map. It's approx 500'-1", it very detailed for the trails in just the Dry River Ranger District. GWNF is broken up into 6-7 different districts.

If you cannot get ahold of one, you can purchase a "Delorme's Virigina Atlas". On pages 66 and 72 are the maps for the trails in GW that most people frequent.

Directions are fairly simple:

Take I-81 towards Harrisonburg, VA to Rt. 33 West. (exit 247).

33 west will wind about 8-9 miles through farmland. As you make a sharp right turn into the mountains, you can start looking for the signs that say each trail.

Dictum Ridge is kinda tricky to find as you have to go down someone's driveway about 10 yard before you get to the left to go up.

Dry River Run can be found on the left after you cross Kephart run (the stream). Make a left by the old red barn/ salt shack, and the trail winds behind the old dam.

Kephart Run make a right onto the trails just before you cross the bridge the say "Kephart Run". make sure you stay on the trail, because much this trail has been closed down.

Slate Springs Run. From McDorman's Store, take 612 South to 733. Make a right on 733 and it will turn into a gravel road and then dirt as it heads into the hills. At the top make a sharp left by the yellow gates (other side is private property).

Second Mountain used to accessable from 33, but overuse and people tearing up Second Mountain Rd, has led to a gate being installed at the top by the folks who live on Second Mountain Rd. It's private property from 33 to the yellowgate, but GWNF property on the other side. You can reach the other side by go to the top of Dictum Ridge and then making a right by the ATV offloading ramps. You can travel down to the backside of the gates, but will have to turn around, (unless it's hunting season down there, when the gates may be open). The powerline trails are off of the trail and you can get a nice little ticket by the Rangers who travel around up there especially during hunting season.

Peter's Mill Run is found in the town of Edinburg in the NE disrict of GWNF. As you make a left off of 81 going South towards the town of Edinburg, continue straight until the road "T"s. Make a left, and then travel until you get to the **** dealership (ironically). Make a right and then go straight until you reach the Edinburg Gap (top of the mountain). At the peak will be ATV parking areas on the right, and on the left will be the trail.

We usually meet at the Shell station next to Food Lion (mapquesters can use the address of 924 W. Market St, Harrisonburg, VA to get directions). This is the last gas stop before the trails.
There is a small store right before you get into the mountains on the left hand side. A few gas pumps, kinda like for last minute supplies. They have a really fast compressor for when you need to air you tires back up for the drive home. Just ask them inside if you can use their air and they'll feed the hose out. In regards to parking at McDormans....

It is true that lately, the folks who live at, and run McDorman's have not been as welcoming as they were in the past. The sign says:

"NO PARKING WITHOUT PERMISSION"

We are always reminded to avoid blocking the driveway so that they (the people who live there) can get in and out.

This map here is from GWNF. click on it to go to the full size version (3.5mb) at imagestation. you can save it from there and use it as you wish.

Holy Hell I've been looking around the internet for weeks and spent a 12 hour day driving in and around GWNF looking for information half as good as this. I just joined but have frequented the forums for tech info and just to see what others have done to their tacoma's. I live in Richmond and my truck is a stocker 2002 TRD Except for the 275 BFG's. I've been through some trails near Crabtree falls but I'm looking for some cooler "weekend" trips. If anyone could suggest any good GWNF day trips with some good scenery(for the girlfriend) or is looking for another person for a group trip PLEASE let me know. Thanks..

That book you're holding inyour hand in your avatar is a good source for VA trails. All of the stuff listed above in on those pages.

For scenery, just about any of the trails is good.

Post up in the "get togethers" section whenever you want to go, and I'm sure people will join you.

There are always some trails open. There is a gate on the road to Second Mountain that is locked except during hunting season but you can still take the long way around.

Here is a link to current conditions in the Forest (http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/conditions/index.shtml).

Here is a link that provides some good trail info (http://www.dirtopia.com/wiki/George_Washington_National_Forest_-_North_River_Ranger_District_(Harrisonburg_Area)).

The link to the map in Beater's post is broken so below is a map of the trails at GWNF to the west of Harrisonburg. Click on it for a larger/printable image. I have marked some of our favorite trails in yellow.

I have a printed map of the entire north portion of GWNF and just scanned in the section where we typically wheel. If you look at the large version you will see Long Run outlined in yellow where it goes from Rt612 (by the Church) to Dictum Ridge/Second Mountain. I don't know anything about Old Long Run Trail.

That used to be the best trail in GWNF, but parts of it run through private land and it is now closed. Been closed for 5 years or so now.

Nope. Your best bet is the link that Donnie posted above: http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/maps_brochures/20080204-mvum-final.pdf

Or a Virginia Atlas and Gazetteer: http://www.amazon.com/Virginia-Atlas-Gazetteer-Gazeteer/dp/0899333265
