View Full Version : We don't need no stinking SAS.

So I thought I'd see if a 1.5" ball joint spacer on stock IFS provides enough lift for 36"s. Turns out, a little work on the firewall is all that it would need. Also, I had to use wheel spacers up front to keep the sidewalls away from the upper control arms.

The rear sits perfect, with just stock '83 springs and a lift shackle.

Now I know I need to build my SAS as low as possible. Here are the pics:

How does it drive with the 36's

It drives okay, considering it's still running 4.10s and my engine is beat.

The front end wobbled quite a bit at around 35 mph, but my ball joints, tie rod ends, and idler arm are all really really sloppy.

The tires themselves seemed balanced okay. From about 40 mph and up it runs about the same as it does with the 32"s.

You ever notice that dent in your passenger side door?

It's actually a dent that has a dent. First one was at Crozet and the second one was at R.C.

Same thing with the driver's side cab behind the door. The first dent was from Tellico, and then I dented the first dent at R.C.

I'm a good driver.

do you not have any problems with the front third? We broke the front spider gears and the ring gear this passed weekend with 31's. Just wondering if this is common or not this was the third time it happened to us.

I have heard of people breaking spider gears, but my front drivetrain is the 18 year old factory original stuff and I've had no problems; stock CVs, stock CV boots, stock gears, stock hubs, etc. I never put a locker up front 'cause I didn't want to break CVs and stuff.

I've wheeled this truck pretty hard and the only thing I've ever broken is the idler arm once (and bent one or two others). I'm sure if I wheeled it with 36"s I'd start breaking IFS parts, and possibly the front diff.

I ran 35s on IFs for awhile and bnever broke the ft diff. I beat on my rig pretty hard with 33s for a long time never breaking the diff. I never broke anything actually. Bent idler arms and a pitman arm.

Beater thats looks good that height 8) BTW your a better driver than me
