WHY?
Too Much Lift
No Flex
The shackle will do more work than the springs.

I agree
FYI I've seen revolvers in action. They are really impressive when you go down a hill and it unloads

I would think so but never had a SA rig from the start. I did however grab a 85shaft and try it in my rig. It wouldnt ever get close to fitting at ride height let alone Droop.

well what do y'all suggest for decent trail riding?

Deffinitly lower. I run a marlin SAS kit in ft and superlifts in the back. Gives about 5 inchs lift total. I run 37x13.5s and had 38.5s on it. There really is no reason to go higher. The ideal thing is to keep it lowe as possible and its more stable.
If I was you honestly you need to look into highsteer and a IFS box. The stock J-arm setup doesnt liek being lifted much and becomes a weak spot quite fast.
Many people run different things. From store bought to home grow.
The easiest thing is what do you want the truck to do in the long run?

i want to trailride with some flex, not like rock crawling but some decent flex. im thinking about lincoln locking the rear and repacking my springs to get rid of the sag. right now thr front springs are reversed...i dont wanna do any serious rocks just your basic stuff like the basic trails up at raush

The key to good leaf springs for any kind of offroading is soft springs. The springs should be rated to just to hold the weight of the truck. Kits like the skyjackers are way to stiff, and ride like a boat anchor.

honestly Turner is right you get what you pay for. You can do it cheaper. But doing it right is the thing. You can do rears up ft,chevy's or ford's in back and highsteer with some ford towers on the cheap if you look. I'd personally roll that before some skyjackers and it would work 10 times better.
350toyota

ive thought about that doin that. and wat do you mean by ford towers?

Some people use ford f250(i think) shock towers cause you need longer shocks. Cheaper but not as cool looking

Okay, this won't be the $200 lift you were thinking of, but here's the best bang for you buck:
1) Take the top 3 leaves from your rear stock springs, and the top 2 leaves of your front stock springs. Cut down the 2 leaves from the front pack and add them to the 3 rear leaves, so that each spring is a bit shorter than the spring above it. Use the new 5 leaf spring pack up front for about 3"-4" of lift. This will also move your axle forward, allowing even bigger tires.
2) Get whatever springs you want for the rear. You can do 63" Chevies from an '88 to '98 1500, but I personally think they're overated, and they involve welding so consider that. Find a spring that'll give you about 4" to match the front. Kajo just used some Ranger springs and they seemed to work well.
3) The cheapest hi-steer right now is at Trail Gear. $369 with free shipping, but you'd also need to get an '86-'95 steering box.
Depending on where you can scrounge parts for cheap, you could have a very smooth riding, flexible, 4" lift that'll fit at least 35"s, and all you really need to spend money on is steering and shocks.
ps- I have Armored's old 5" Sky Jackers in my garage right now. I tried jumping on them to see how they flex compared to some sock '88 springs and some stock '99 Taco springs that I also have. I honestly can't get the Sky Jackers to flex more than 3/4", and the other two packs of srpings will each flex about 2".

I am getting ready to start on my 83 as well, putting rears up front, considering the chebby's with a double shackle out back, I already have budbuilt's hangers for the rears, and bananna shackles for the front....getting hysteer soon, gonna try to run 37's so longfield inners and outers are going to be necessary...keep us posted

A Double shackle is 1 shackle which lays flat against the frame and another that holds the spring to the shackle. When the spring droops out the other(flat shackle) will drop out giving much more articulation. Basicly it a revolver shackle it opens and gives more droop.
The bad things that these can do if not setup correctly. They tend to unload very fast on steep descents.
I'm not a big fan of this setup but it does work well for lotsa people.

ditto on that, I am planning on using the chevy's in the rear with the toy factory shackle, and the chevy shackle, basically it keeps you from having to relocate the rear hanger..I am cutting the frame off the rear (longbed)so I will not be moving to the rear, plus it will give more droop

Chevy spring flex down but not up. Atleast mine where like that. I always herd that that shackle set up gave alot of wheel hop and axle wrap.

That is not flex. that is down travel vs up travel. You wheels did'nt have any place to go in the up direction.

I may add a traction bar similar to what Bud sells...Iam still up in the air as to what the rear will entail (rear, tail hur hur) some people have had really good results with mazda springs too

So why doesnt anybody like lifts from marlin, trail-gear, or all pro, or people like that?
Their lifts are fine. The prices used to be a lot higher but competition has forced them lower. Trail Gear is now the Wal-Mart of Toyota Stuff. Low Low Prices. I'm going to using the Trail Gear SAS kit for my Formula Toy.

I run Marlins. It gets wheeled hard ALOT. No probs to date. Only thing I dont like is changing shackle bushing every couple months cause it chews them up.
Now that TG is on the scene price wars will happen again. That means good stuff cheaper for us :D

You have a spare cat laying around? I noticed my 85 truck is missing the cat. I guess the previous ower removed it.

I was just wondering because my friends got an 89 he wants to sell me, and i have a spare 84 front axle housing now, thanks to Kajo, and i was thinking about getting the Trail Gear SAS and rear lift. I want to do 35" tires on the truck, what backspacing do you recommend on the rims?

A lot of people run 2.5", but you can go with up to about 3.75" I think.
Or you can use wheel spacers and wheels with more backspacing. Firemanjohn has some for sale in the trade section.

I ran 4 inch BS 15x8s with MTRs on mine. I used the stock rear housing and a Sky widening kit on ft. I cleared everything fairly well. The tires didnt rub the leafs at full lock up ft. At full Stuff in back it would rub the inside of the bed barely though.

Oh yeah for the sake of interenet info.
I'm running 4 inch BS now with 15x10s and 37x13.5s and clear everything. I do have 1inch spacers in back though just to add some width not for clearance reasons.
My kralwers was 37s and had 1 inch spacers all the way around with 4.5 inch BS wheels. They didnt hit anything either.
My SX's I ran only rear spacers. Again just to widen the rig. I didnt hit anything major.
Side note I had a crap load of tires this year
My firewall had to be moved a bit by a BFH to fit 37s and quite a bit of trimming to clear 37s. BTW 38.5 SX's are 37 tall

I have 4 inch springs with the lower removed. I had 2 lowers removed for the first 6 months till I got my winch on. Your 36s should fit fine since you already trimmed some. Dont forget you axle goes forward with the swap which helps tons with clearance.

Yeah, a couple days after I got my springs I remembered my winch sitting in the corner of tha garage and I thought I should have gotten 4" springs. I'll make it work.
I'm tenatively planning to cut off the IFS the weekend of March 4 & 5. I'll get measurments once it's all bolted up, and then again once the springs settle.

Using marlins pitman(stock with insert). Never moved box. Mine cracked right behind the hanger both sides. The DS in MUCH worst cause the box tries to twist it. Both the sleeves for the box are cracked right around the welds. Now in all honesty my ft hanger gets alot of stress. My winch is mounted to it, I use the shackles on the winch mount to tie it down. Its seen quiet a bit of rocks and impacts to it. It did have a small crack once before at a bolt hole but was fixed and never cracked there again including now.
I think I will be moving the box forward now since I'm going to plate the frame rails. We will see though I been kicking the idea of Hydro around awhile.
