View Full Version : Alignment

Ever since I was able to fix the truck last year the alignment is still really off. I needed a new steering colomn so I found a guy on the national forum in Texas that took his out. Assuming that he knew I had a "97 I paid to have it shipped to NoVA only to find out it goes to a 2000. My mechanic was able to get it on but the steering is just really off. The actual steering wheel is 90 degrees off what it should be. (My cruise control is pointing straight up instead of on the right). It wouldn't be such a big deal except for the turning radius is really sucking. I can barely make U turns and have trouble parking. It would be impossible to take her on the trail I think, and really need to figure something out. I went to several shops that all said they couldn't do an alignment on the type of wheels that I have (that there's no lip on the side of the wheel to attach the machine to.) Any insights are appreciated!
Hey Perv!, think I could come up to the Ferry and swap wheels with you one day? :smt061

Every alignment machine I have ever used has inside and outside wheel clamps. I've been doing alignments for 12 years. I've used old string machines on rims with no edge.

You know seeing what Ted wrote made me think of something. If the toe is fairly straight make sure the spline is on where it supposed to be. I know on my 94 I can more my wheel anywhere cause it has no dead splines to align the steering rods from the collum to the box.
Hey Eric. I've been doing my own garage eye ball aligments. I wished you lived closer, it would be nice to have someone I trust work on my truck.

Maybe, but it'd be so much cooler if you did it for me.

I went to about three different shops in Manassas and they all said the same thing. It's because there's no lip on the wheel. Sounds really stupid to me too.

No wheel lip? Bring it to me a Sears (greenbrier mall) I can align it with out a wheel lip, just ask for Jake and come see me in the shop.Runs about $64.99 with a 6 month/6,000 mile warrenty. Don't talk to the sales people first or they will Tell you we can't align it.
