Rausch Creek AND Paragon trip.
1st annual, "Stop typing and wheel your truck" run.
Note, this is not TTORA specific.
Drive up Friday June 16, camp at RC, wheel RC Saturday the 17th then drive up to Paragon and camp there. Wheel Paragon Sunday the 18th until they kick us out. Camp there, then drive back on Monday the 19th.
Len, Tom(guttersnax,) and I will be running a greenish/blue group(Minimum 31" tires, armor where you need it, some experience off road, tow points front and rear, a locker preferably, sliders would be nice, a tow strap that's actually been used :D, not afraid of possible body damage with the minimum, must like dogs) limited to less than 10 trucks, so if you're interested, post up ASAP please. If there's a lot of interest we might break up into multiple greenish/blue groups.
If someone wants to do a green only group, that's fine, but someone else needs to take the lead on that group.
If some folks want to go and run higher trails, someone take the lead for that group please. I'll make camping arrangements and serve as a contact the parks for all involved if needed.
Camping would be on-site at Rausch Creek Friday night(free with membership/daily fee,) then at the Red Ridge Lake Campground(@ $10/night) near Paragon Saturday and Sunday.
Drivers please note there are membership fees and daily fees to run the parks. The fees are nominal, and can be found here for RC, (http://www.rauschcreekoffroadpark.org/faq.php) and here for Paragon. (http://www.paragonap.com/p_rates.htm) Note there may also be small daily fees and membership fees for riders as well; consult the websites of the parks for info.

Why not do Paragon on Saturday, and RC on Sunday. RC is closer to home.

We could do that...
It's either a longer drive on Friday or a longer drive on Monday. When you're driving from Hampton Roads, like us, it's only the difference between seven and eight hours. I guess for the NOVA folks it might make the difference in taking off on Monday or coming home Sunday night.
That being the case, to accommodate folks, it would be no problem to do Paragon first, then come down to RC. That would work.

I'll try to make it. But I would likely end up doing easy-to-mid-black trails. If I go, I will guide that group.

At RC, we could even run part of the day as one group and hit the trails that have hard obstacles with easy bypasses. There aren't as many of those types of trails at PAP.

I was thinking the same thing. RC has a lot of trails with bypasses for the harder obstacles. I think it would be good for the newer guys to see the bigger trucks take the harder stuff. It would be VERY nice to see a Toy go through the Rock Creek especially. Wanna test the SAS?

At 84:1 I don't really have the gearing for it. It could be done, but my cheap ass clutch wouldn't be happy. Turner ran a portion of it in his IFS junk on 34"s, but he has gearing of about 177:1, or soomething like that. If I get new ring and pinions by then I'll check it out.

I think it would be neater for all involved to an hour closer to home on the drive back. I'm the type of person that never likes to back track :)

There is that nice camp ground near Paragon, and there is a KOA near RC if you want camping with running watch and such.

So what you going to do when people break on Sat. and can't drive down to RC? You might need some time to do repairs.

There are more places to get parts near PAP. Besides for the stores there is 2 PYP junkyards right there. The parts places also sell tools if youneed them.

I'll try and make it 8) I dont know my work schedule that far out.

If this helps in the decision making process of which park to do Sat. and which to do Sun., the Coal Mine Cruiser Classic will be at Paragon on Thur.-Sat. While it would be cool to see a bunch of Cruisers on the trail, and I know a couple people going to this, I think Kyle's original plan of RC first and then PAP would be the best bet.

Thanks for the update Beater. That might make a difference in which park we schedule when.

So who is actually in for this thing, or at least who else has interest?

Right now I've still only got Len, Guttersnax(Tom,) and myself with Shortyv6 as a maybe for the blue and high green group.
If you want to wheel a higher level, let me know and I'll try to help you coordinate a group.
Groups of three+ are required at both parks.

More wheeling, less web-wheeling!

I'll be there. I havent been to any gatherings with you guys so this should be interesting to say the least. I guess my question is, what trails to run. Im runnin basically stock with with 5.5 lift and 33's. I dont have any winch or lockers/gears(dam lack of money). So what trails are options?

BeaterToyota
04-26-2006, 12:29 AM
Donnie, your rig can easily handle all of the green trails, and the easier blue trails. If you want a bit of a challenge, then the upper blues and lower blacks are still doable, but at a greater risk of body damage. There will definitely be a group that you'll fit into.

I'm actually open on which park which day. The point is to hit both that weekend. When we get a little closer, we'll make a decision on that. Let me know (all) if you have a preference. Ted suggested starting at PAP Saturday. I don't care either way, it's up to what everyone else wants as far as I'm concerned. Some folks may be doing just one park on one day or the other, if you have a day/park preference, post it up.

Okay, this is looking pretty bleak.
Guttersnacks has dropped out of driving his Heep, but will ride along and perform spotting and photography duties as needed.
Len is in contingent on us getting his lift and skid in next weekend; shouldn't be an issue.
Beater, looks like you're headed up to PA the week before, so I'm guessing you're out.
Ted, has that 75% turned into 100%?

I am out, but not necessarily 'cause I'm going the weekend before.
Jenn's oldest nephew is graduating that weekend, my sisiter is having her annual pig roast at her house on Saturday, and Sunday is father's day, so I'm gonna have a busy weekend.

If you can't get enough people to go, why not go the weekend before or the weekend after? There are several people going both of those weekends.

If I had the option I would, but with my new job, it's not so easy to get time off. I've had this planned for a while now, and have already gotten the time off. This new job's got me on call almost every other weekend. I'd complain, but, they pay very well. It'll work out, one way or another.

I totally understand how that goes. When I was in college and worked retail it was the same sort of thing, where you had to work weekends and you had to plan like a year in advance in order to get weekends off. Sorry I'm bailing, I just forgot about all the other stuff I already had planned.

Come on up with us, we'll pick you up on the way.

Tom and I have to get some U Joints replaced on his rust bucket heep(:D) next weekend. If we get that done, he's in and the trip is a go. If not and no one else joins in, it's off.

So if you, or anyone else wants to join in, you're more than welcome!

Tom's driving his truck if we can get the work done this weekend. If we fail, i.e. a bolt breaks off or something, then he can't drive, but will ride up with me, and we'd have to have at least one more to come.
It'd be GREAT if you guys could join us either way!

John (lifejacket) broke the lower shock bolt off in his lower control arm when we went to GWNF, and its still not fixed. The shock is just swinging around while he drives the truck everyday. He keeps spending his money on stereos and other crap, so it will probably never be fixed. Hes to lazy to go out and buy the new bolt and drill out the old one.

Maybe I'll just drive the wifes 98 2WD instead. Should I leave the running boards on too?

On the serious side, Friday is "driving up" day, so we can work out whatever is needed to meet up somewhere and caravan up to Pa. Does someone have a CB now?

cbabywolf02
06-06-2006, 06:32 AM
I say leave them on they are a new style of rock sliders. No on the cb as on right now, Plus you can make in 2wd the runner did for the most part, plus if you get stuck you will have plenty of real trucks to help you out.

Eric_N
06-06-2006, 06:36 AM
Im to cheap to buy a CB. I think the honk and run the the car in front/behind you method is a lot better anyway, it promotes good face to face conversation. And im never sleeping in the back of an 84 4Runner again, expecially now that is has a 12" sub and amp in the back of it.

Theres nothing worse than wrecking at 70 mph because a steering knuckle exploded from a bad u-joint.

Eric_N
06-06-2006, 07:23 AM
Is that what happened to your ****? That sucks. My neighbor put is 03 Wrangler with a 4.5" lift, 33's, locked with some other stuff into a gaurd rail on 83 at 70. He fell asleep at the wheel and took out the right front of the ****, tearing the tire off the rim and shooting the spring 200 feet in front of him. He was supposed to come on this trip.

gtrsnax
06-06-2006, 07:33 AM
No, nothing happened...........yet. But all the needle bearings in my u-joint on the drivers side axel (and probably passenger too) are gone. Like rusted, pulverized, and whisped away in the breeze. One more wheeling trip and I would have been doing another fricking trail repair.
Now my issue is that the 3 bolts that hold the hub to the steering assembly are rusted together. They have "become one" as the Spice Girls used to sing. They will get replaced when they come out.

Eric_N
06-06-2006, 07:58 AM

I hope so. Kyle and I are gonna tackle it this Saturday, and if something major goes wrong, I'll be a rider for the trip. I hope to get it all working though.

Hey that's not fair, if I went with black rims it would just be to dark of a truck, but if it wasn't for that I would go with black rims too. Plus they would be lighter than my chrome ones that weigh like 100lbs each. :)

Looks like 83 might be ya'll best bet and we'll just meet you WAY north up the trip route. Pine Grove is right about where we are heading. It's exit 100 and RC is exit 112 or something. Then Paragon is just another 20 miles up the skreet.

hecull
06-07-2006, 05:11 AM
I think RC is the better place to hit first. Paragon is a bit more technical, even for our level trails, so better to warm up at RC I think.

I'm thinking 95, to 270, to 70, to 81. Or. we might do 83. I'm open to suggestions as I don't know traffic patterns in NOVA very well; I've normally just been on a train or in a cab every time I've been up there.

There are three of us(hopefully) driving from down here, and we're about 3.5 hours from DC.

I want to leave early on Friday, but would like to keep a couple hours in reserve in case we have last minute wrenching, welding or other preparations to do.

I would expect that we could meet you guys around Noon on Friday in the DC/Baltimore area.

The tentative plan is drive up Friday, camp at RC, Wheel RC Saturday, then drive up to Paragon and camp at Red Ridge Saturday night, wheel all day at Paragon, camp at Red Ridge Sunday night, then drive back on Monday. Some may have to drive back Sunday night after wheeling, and that's cool too. All this is tentative, and I'm open to what people need to accomodate their jobs, etc.

Everyone that's going (aside from Tom and Len,) please PM me your email address and contact phone number. We'll start an email thread instead of taking up space here. Please do this ASAP so we can get everything settled.
Thanks guys(and gal,)

Other than Tom almost spotting me into a flop(thanks again to those that grabbed my bumper,) a couple brake and battery issues, some front clips getting dinged by Camburg upper arms, and a CV boot, we got out of both parks unscathed. I didn't even get to beat on my sliders, though, my welds probably wouldn't have held anyway
We even got to do a few trail mods, like the Webber grill/battery clamp mod, and the fridge-wire/grey-wire mod; the rock vs exhaust and/or hitch mod was a given as well.
No one even got stuck, though it was pretty dry at both parks.

Len and I put the Donahoes, Camburgs, and BudBuilt's to the test!
The videos are kinda large, but..

Here's Len. (http://kyleodom.net/pictures/4x4/Len_jump_2.MOV)

Here I go. (http://kyleodom.net/pictures/4x4/Kyle_Jump_2.MOV)

Lots of fun, I'll post more pics later.

Actually, I checked my exhaust out today, and it came out fine. I must of rubbed the frame rails on the hill. I did destroy my connector for trailer hitch wiring and beat up the front skidplate more though.

hehe yeah that was a nice manuver. She actually got the rear end higher up than that, but instead of shooting the shot I ran up to grab the rear cause it looked almost like it was going over. I think that little move is what made the battery fall out.

That is a great pic. You guys need to post the pic of Kyles truck dong the same thing. Len and I managed to get our left front tires on the ledge on the left so we didnt lift our right rear tires high.

Is that at Rausch? If so, that was the first place I got to see my SAS flex a little.
My junk lifted a rear tire also, but it felt more stable than the old IFS. I need some new rear springs soon.

Yea, the runner has rough country front/superlift rear springs and crappy shocks. I wish we had pics of how we had to reset the rear shocks every once in a while because they wouldnt rebound.

Yup, RC, same spot as your pic. I don't know how high my tire was, but it was more than a bit scary. I'd have much rather had a SFA or have been on the other side of the bank.

This pic was taken right before it got ugly, Tom had me straighten out from there, and that's when things felt a bit tippy:

Yeah, that's the same position from the other side. Once Tom had me straighten out and I went two feet forward, the rear went up a LOT more, well, it felt like it anyway. Then my tire got stuck in the hole and the steering wouldn't budge, so I had no choice. Nick and Len need to gain more weight before the next run to help keep my ass on the ground!

LOL, yeah, It's actually a road on my GPS, Goldmine Road or something like that. I've ran that same spot at least three times and never had a problem.
Tom was spotting and said he wanted to make it "interesting" for me... Sure did.

Is there nothing else to talk about? :smt022
Did you forget that you caught some air when you ran up the jump?

SWEET avatar Len, thats the shiznit!!! Once the Wrangler is trail worthy (or shit, even road worthy for that matter) we'll head back and do some blues

The Blazer story - On the way home, we hit some bad traffic in the HOV lane on 95S. Some asshole decided they were gonna ride the shoulder to get where they wanted to go, so Len stopped 'em first by cutting them off, and then they tried to get around and i jumped in front to hold em up again. They got pretty pissed, but hey, they were assholes, thats what assholes do when they dont get their way. So, later on, Kyle popped his head out of the back window and gave them a nice big WAVE :smt039: and then took their picture. It was almost priceless. They finally jumped off at a cut through and THEN got the balls to give us some shit about it with a :smt098: as they puttered along in traffic about 10 mph faster than us.

We ran into basically the same thing on the way home. We ran into a backup on 70(yea, we took the wrong way home due to nicks horrible navigation skills) and thier was a truck stop on the right so a lot of people were jumping off and running fast down the truck stop to try to get ahead of people. When they were trying to merge back in one guy in a brand new ford fivehundred was trying to get between me and tina and we wouldnt let them in, so he tryed to get infront of me and i wasnt having it, he tryed to muscle me out of the way and i almost put a 33" tall nascar tire mark on the side of his car. I hate people who are that impatient. Thier the main reason traffic like that gets backed up so bad.

Thanx mate! Hehehee, Kyle time. Just bring your Adventure Box and Im sure we'll have all kinds of gizmo's to have it done in less then 2 hours.
Right now it's a fundage issue with the wife being unemployed. I really just need to get the front axel U-joints taken care of. I also have a hand sized rust spot on the rocker panel that needs to be patched somehow. It's under my sliders, so it aint gotta be pretty, it just needs to keep water out. Oh yea, and the brake lines could use to be replaced so they dont rust through like my last one did. After that, Im trail ready. Everythng else I want to do is just icing on the rust cake.

Hey, I resemble that remark!
It shouldn't be a problem.
I think I'm just going to buy a shop press and bring it to Tom's this weekend and get those U Joints done.
How about your CV? Have you cleaned it up enough to see what the issue is? Blown boot, or diff leaking? Need a hand?
