Okay so the other day I went to take my 84 Runner to emissions. (yea, I know what a waste) but anyway I figured I would share with you my results. Well first of all the good thing it that she passed the gas cap test but other than that it's all down hill from there.
It failed the hydrocarbons test, state limit is 2.8000 gpm the runner did 3.6458 gpm.
It failed the carbon monixide test, state limit is 80.000 gpm the runner did 93.2960 gpm.
It barley passed the oxide of nitrogen test, state is 5.8000 gpm the runner did 1.8020 gpm.
The best was the guy trying have her run on the treadmill, when it was all said and done the computer screen said that the vehicle did not have enough power to perform the test. That was to me the funniest. So they gave until August to get it fixed but even then she still won't have it in her to do the treadmill test.
I was actually hoping the tires wouldn't fit but the just made it, so anyone with 33's can still fit on the dyno.
But anyway just thought it would be nice to share and see if you guys have any suggestions on getting her to pass.
But the one majior thing is that the carb that I have on her the weber 32/36; doesn't have any emissions hooked up so I don't know what to do about that, I just wish the historic rules were for vehicles over 21 not 25, but oh well.

We checked the timing when we were trying to get it to run right with the Weber 32/36. It was off my 3* but we set it then. I still think its the carb not adjusted right, b/c it was never really adjusted after we put the carb on and found that the electric choke wasnt operating correctly.

Fuel additives are your friend. :D

My wife has an '88 VW Cabby that I couldn't get to pass for shit. A buddy of mine told me to run the tank down to about a gallon of gas and put 2 bottles of "octane boster" in the tank. I took his advice and when I ran it through the emissions test for the 5th time, it registered almost no emissions whatsoever. The tech at the test station started laughing. He knew what was up.

Nice. I wanna know how large of a tire can fit on the rollers. They almost didnt put the Runner on thier with the 33"s, they kept looking at them and looking at them. Im wondering when my '92 has 35"s on it if it will fit on the rollers.

My oil spewing 84 Runner with a hollow converter passed just last month.
Just did the engine rev test, no treadmill.

Doesn't a 92 have OBD II, and therefore they just read the codes ?

You should have seen the look on the dude's face when I told him I had a spool in the rearend, and that I just wanted him to know before he tried pulling the truck around the parking lot and backing it onto the rollers.

The county I live in now doesn't have emissions inspections. Living in the country kicks ass.

BTW, my '88 EFI has never even come close to failing, and I don't know anything about carbs, so I guess I can't help you solve your problems.

Yeah, I had a few people tell me to dump stuff in the tank so that I would have more oxygen in it but I still don't think that would help, then I had other people tell me to make my cat hallow and then take it but honestly I think it is already hallow b/c of the pure gas I am not burning going down there, I'm just trying to think of ways to get this thing to pass.

Doubt it. I'm pretty sure that's why they didn't give me the roller test this time.

Quick way to set up the carb is with a vaccum guage.Attach the vac guage to a direct manifold port and adjust it until you get the highest vac reading this will also work for timing.

I have done all of that and everything came out right, I think it just boils down to getting the truck to stop running so rich.

I was wondering does anyone know if you fail once do you have to pay again when you go back or is it when you pay; a one time thing until you have to do it again in 2 years?
