Is there any way to tell if you have a bent valve with out pulling the head? I was working on replacing the timing chain on the 92 pickup that I bought and I found that the crank was 90* farther along then the cam and I am not sure if it would have bent some valves.

You could do a leakdown test

Yes a compression tester would be the best way. Just sucks you have to put the new belt on first.

I just tore down my 91, dont you have to pull the head to do the timing chain? I have a compression tester if you need one, but im sure someone closer to you may have one too.

I am going to pull the oil pan. I have a compression tester and tried testing before I started taking stuff apart and I was getting very low pressure which would be the case if the valves are not closed in the right position. I will put the chain on in the right position and re-run the compression test

That sucks. Youve got a new head on that motor too right? I hope your head isnt messed up also.

The previous owner had the motor rebuilt ~30K miles ago. I have a rebuilt engine ready to go in but I was hoping that all I need to do was change the timing chain in the current engine.
